Ex-Googlers cool on new Search Engine called Cuil

One more search engine on the way. But this time it is by former Google employees. It’s called cuil (Pronounced as cool). According to cuil, they search more pages than any other search engine including Google and Microsoft Live. Also they provide more relevant search results. They are also very particular about user’s privacy. Unlike Google which analyze user’s search history to provide relevant results, (http://www.cuil.com/info/our_philosophy/) cuil analyzes just web for providing relevant results. If you are fed up with the big G and it’s intrusion into your private life, start using cuil. They have also provided search plug-in for Firefox.

Search Experience in Cuil

Couple of searches in cuil provided me really cool results arranged in three columns (Can be changed to two columns). It also provided a category list relevant to the search (There are some irrelevant stuffs also indexed). To get more relevant results, Searcher needs to provide more specific keywords in cuil than in Google. Still there is lot of scope for improvement for cuil. Overall cuil is in a right path to make searching experience really cool.

My search for the keyword “Kannada” indexed some websites relevant to Kannada but the categories part included some results which is quite irrelevant to my search. “Indian actors”, “Forms of Vishnu”, “Hindu Holy cities” etc. which is included in the categories doesn’t make any sense. Neither I was able to link these results one another nor with my keyword.

Here is a trial searches for iPhone as keyword in Google and cuil. In Google the first two results will direct you to apple.com.

In cuil not just the first result directed to apple, they also indexed the relevant pages in apple website that provides information regarding iPhone.

They also searched for relevant key phrases and provided in tabs. Have a look at the above screen shots.

Here are some more screen shots of the results by cuil which shocases their search engine concepts and features.
