An interesting article was published in NASSCOM Emerge Blog by Abhishek Rungta, IndusNet Technologies. The article talks about the current HR environment in Indian IT industry.
Mr.Rungta has made some interesting findings about the current mistrust environment in Indian IT industry. His article highlights how there is a relationship without trust exists between todays employer and employee in IT Industry. He also mentions some important points that lead to such situation.
I would like to take that discussion further and would like to mention my view point about the issue. Though I'd like to look upon the issue to arrive at a solution, here I've just confined myself to discuss only the basics of how such situation arised in India. Later in may be in my future articles I look into this issue inorder to arrive at a solution. Please bear with me for a bit long narration of the story.
It's well said that the IT industry in India as well as the employees are in infant stage. To if there is a mistrust environment exists then It's Industry which has to be blamed. Indians are never even dream of getting 6 figure salary in late 70's and early 80's. Instead of projecting the positives of software industry, they attracted people solely based on the unreasonably high salaries. Which obviously created an impression that employees can get richer over night. But more and more people entered the industry the playground is flattened. Now whatever be your salary you won't feel rich.
Even the work environment promoted by IT industry also unreasonable. They put one person for a task which can only be completed by 3 people. Which results in prolonged working hours, late night shifts, strict schedule, work pressure. influence of Western culture and life style. Even the Frequent overseas trips. Which ultimately results in more expectation, High stress. To releve from all this they start finding very unusual ways which again put them in debt. The cycle is started by the industry.
When there was no such environment in India they created such environment and now they are the victims.
We can't put blame on employees completely. Because most of the aspiring employees in IT industry are from middle and lower middle class of Indian Society. For whome lack of money is the source of each and every problem they face. Obviously IT industry created an impression that one can earn more money within few years that they can't even dream of earning over their life.
Even now in Tier-III, Taluk and Rural areas IT industry means a cash cow. Every one want their pupil to be in IT Industry. The expectation on an Employee from Parents, relatives, Society is very high. You can't explain how much pressure and stress it creates on employee it can only be experienced.
With influence of western culture and lifestyle the things become even more worse and complicated. With more cash in the hands of people all sort of companies attached India to offer their useless service and products. It's like giving from right hand and capturing that money from left hand strategy. But in between employees will suffer a serious mental and physical trauma.
Because of easily available of Money the prices gone sky high. Now whatever you earn you can't afford to few basic necessities. It even worsen the lives of people who are not in IT Industry and earn more. The cost of living in the cities like Bangalore, Noida, Pune, Hydarabad are too high. Common man cannot even think of living there.
Coming to i-want-to-retire-young mindset, for most of the employees working in IT Industry is not so joyful experience. They want to pursui something else but lack of capital stress them to work in a company make good money and then pursui the career that they dream off.
As they are forcefully or influentially made to pursue career in IT industry, it's obvious that they don't have any career objective.
With so many companies offering so many products, services, credit cards, loans, it's tempting for any employee to go for it. The result "Spending money that they haven't earned to buy those things that they don't want, to impress people that they don't like".
